Oscars 2019

Now that all the Oscar-hype has settled down, let’s take a step back and a second look at the do’s and the don’ts from the ceremony…

The Academy Awards, also known as the Oscars, are a set of awards for artistic and technical merit in the film industry. The red carpet is the route taken by our celebrity favourites, and like most of us, I was waiting in anticipation and excitement to see who made a statement in their attire and who should have re-thought their look!!!

It’s very rare that Jennifer Lopez makes a statement on the red carpet for me, though this year, in Tom Ford, she rocked it. The gown, which looked like broken mirror ball pieces, was just beautifully tailored to her gorgeous figure. Accompanied by a soft and a simple hair do, it balanced her edgy, sharp look perfectly.

We all know and await in anticipation to see what Lady Gaga will deliver on the red carpet… and that she did! In a statement gown by Alexander McQueen, it was designed perfectly to match her personality. Elegance in black, structured to compliment her physique and a platinum bun to tie it all in.

Also making a statement in a black gown was Allison Janney. Designer Pamella Roland created a simple line, beautifully tailored with an angled peplum and executed perfectly with a statement neck piece.

Choosing the correct colour way for an event is vital as certain hues can make or break the gown. The following ladies chose perfectly!

The simple framed Versace gown that Kiki Layne wore in a soft baby pink hue, compliment her gorgeous skin tone.

Charlize Theron can make no error and in this baby blue gown by Dior, she does just that. Adding jazz to her stylish outfit with statement jewellery and bold red lips, accompanied with a slick dark bob… picture perfect!

Tina Fey brought a dazzling, rich, vibrant hue to the red carpet. Wearing Vera Wang, the striking hue was an excellent choice to mix in with the soft texture of the gown.

Another eye-catching hue is this stunning gown that Alicia Malone wore. The bold hue matched perfectly with her soft porcelain skin. Adding classic Hollywood locks, she screamed the perfect style for the awards!

In the men’s department, there were two chaps that really stood out for me. Nicholas Hoult, who put a spin on the traditional tux, arrived wearing an all-black look by Dior, including a striking jacket which featured decorative pleats.

Whilst Hoult went for a modern look, Henry Golding opted for a classic old Hollywood style, looking striking and very sharp in his custom Ralph Lauren tux!

Now I’m not sure what was going on with Maya Rudolph in Giambattista Vall, but I can only imagine her inspiration came from a cross between grandma’s floral sofa and Demis Roussos’ kaftans! There are no other words to add other than a very non-flattering gown. The old adage of ‘go bold or go home’ definitely worked against her in this unmissable (for all the wrong reasons) flower power pink gown!

If toilet roll dollies were still in (and for some out there, they may still be) then Kacey Musgraves would surely take the cake in this Giambattista Valli gown. Drowning in layers of pink tutu, it’s a fairy floss mess!

SZA wore a layered asymmetric, white, corseted dress by Vivienne Westwood on the red carpet. The confused gown with frayed fringe detailing and featuring a high leg slit with angles leading to nowhere… I wasn’t sure who she was, then found out she’s a singer who clearly didn’t hit the right notes in this puzzled number!

And yet again, that’s a wrap on my take on this year’s best and worst dressed for the 2019 Oscars… who was your favourite???
